Hi Jason.....Do High River a favor and don't open another restaurant, nightclub or anything else of that nature. High River is called High River for reasons other than just
because the river tends to run "high" at times. Try opening a health club or spa that offers
behavior modification for food and substance abuse.

Hi there, I'm moving to High River at the end of the month and am curious about what type of business your town needs. I am experienced in the computer repair and sales business, and could possibly also start a pizza place, or maybe a lounge or nightclub. I'm not sure of how many of these places you have in town.
Thanks for your help

High River needs major road upgrades just for traffic flow right now. The only place with decent parking is in the Extra Foods parking lot. Downtown parking forget it.

I hear TD Bank's started some extended hours and i have to say it's about time High River businesses start smelling the coffee- the town has grown so rapidly with the booming Calgary housing market and therefore has become more of a bedroom community to Calgary. I for one am tired of rushing like a maniac or leaving work early to try to get things done in town. It makes me wonder who are these companies catering to? Their clientele or their own personal, or staff's, convenience?

Comments: Hi there,
My name is Kathleen Howell and I am the Shoot Production Coordinator for
Veer ( www.veer.com ). We are a Calgary-based
company that sells stock
photography - professional photographs of regular people in real-life
situations - to the advertising and publishing industries.
For our next project, we are looking for two Calgary-area or Southern
Alberta farms to use for locations for a photo shoot. We're looking for
one
farm to have a red barn. We'd also like it to have one or more of the
following: a porch, chickens, pigs, horses, cows (dairy and/or beef) and any
other animals. On the second farm we are looking for large fields that are
to be harvested. Ideally, we'd also like to see an irrigation system as
well as newer farm equipment to take pictures of.
We will pay a location fee if we use the space. The shoot will take place
one or two days in August or September.
If you know of a place or know of anyone interested, please email me with a
description of the farm at khowell(at)veer.com.
If you have any questions,
please feel free to email me as well.

Time: 11:06:40 PM
Comments: To those who are wondering about the fires. The one at the Gateway was an accident (I was told from a friend who worked there) it was a short in the electrical.
As for the other fires there were a few people arrested but only 1 was officially charged. As for why they did it I think that they have way to much time on their hands and don't know what to do with it. I was told that the first Salvation Army fire was in the dumpster and it was to close to the building as for the second I have heard
"hot spots" but can't be 100% sure.
All of the fires (accept the gateway) were set by the same group of people and their associates. This is what has been said by those who were affected by this and as far as I know from what I have read in the paper only 1 person was officially charged.
If you want to read more go to www.highrivertimes.com and look in the "archives" under fires.

Concerning: Three Cheers for Australia!
Date: 01/24/2006
Time: 09:37:02 AM
Comments: Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.
A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.
Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some
radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that
Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament.
"If those are not your values, if You want a country which has Sharia law
or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national
television.
"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said.
Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said
those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other
country.
Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not
want to accept local values should "clear off".
"Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.
AMERICA and Canada..... ARE YOU LISTENING?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------ Australia- The Right to Leave Our Country - YOU Have the
right...................the right to leave !
After Sydney not wanting to offend other cultures by putting up Xmas lights.
After hearing that The State of South Australia changed its opinion and let a
Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered.
This prompted this editorial written by an Australian citizen.
Published in an Australian newspaper.
Quote:
IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.
However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is Seeking a better life by coming to Australia.
However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.
This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle.
This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the language!
Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push but a fact because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, Because God is part of our culture.
We will accept your beliefs and will not question why, all we ask is that you accept ours and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.
If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like " A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.
We are happy with our culture and have no desire to Change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means keep your culture but do not force it on others.
This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this.
But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE".
If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here.
You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.
Pretty easy really, when you think about it. I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please.
Thank you!

Concerning: The Walking Paths in High River
Date: 02/14/2006
Time: 01:51:03 PM
Comments: As a 15 year old student in High River, the walking paths and sidewalks are an important part of High River for the youth. There are a couple of problems that I have.
1)The Walk from Turbo to The Golf Course.
-Walking through this path at night is both scary and dangerous. The one that goes from cross the street from turbo, over that bridge and into the golf course. There is no lighting while walking through and it is scary so the town should consider putting
lighting in there. I know of many people who walk through there early in the morning or at night when it is dark and it is not very enjoyable at all.
2) The Roads that go along the train tracks right before 12 Ave. These roads have
sidewalks up until the library... when people are rollerblading or biking to get to 12 ave on these paths they have no sidewalk and they have to go on the road and risk getting hit by a car. The town should also consider adding
walkways on either side of those two roads.
Thank you for taking the time to read these comments.

Comments: Wow, it's time for an updated comment I see....as for the fires, yes I would of thought there would of been more comments too...but YES, they caught the "kids" and the one young adult...Thank goodness, when the sheds they started on fire were 3 doors down my back alley, I thought "this is too close to home" and cringed at the thought of them lurking around close by my home....The way I see it, they should of made those kids clean up the rubbish at the Sally Ann store, piece by piece by hand...right down to the last splinter of glass and in the presence of our town residents....How much manpower and machinery was used to clean up after the mess THEY created? I am just glad they have been caught....but to the young teenagers who were driving around Notre Dame Collegiate on Thursday Jan.19 around 10:45 pm who thought they were cool to throw out lit fireworks on the dry grass on school property...yes YOU were seen! In a dark red-burgundy pickup truck (obviously your parents') Don't you think High River has had enough fires already? What were you thinking? That is soooo uncool man! Parents...what are your teenagers doing on a school night past 10 pm in "your" vehicles? I want my son to grow up in a small, SAFE town, one of the reasons I moved here!

exception of a few parks and trails in Edmonton again begs the question. High River has a golden opportunity to develop in an unbelievable good fashion - for the people to
interrelate and bond - young, old and otherwise. It's up to your councilors to plan ahead - working with the town planner and have vision for the next twenty years. The past fifty has altered the town hardly at all.

As officer Anderson handed me the ticket she said" I was going to give you a warning , but"
My question is "but, WHAT?"
The reason for the "but" is officer Anderson took offence to me saying they should get to armed robberies in less that 25 minuets and stop the vandals from tearing this town apart at night.
The driver didn't have a seat belt on either, he didn't get a ticket!
I say it's time the RCMP get priorities straight. I would bet anything that while 2 old men where being stopped for not wearing seat belts going for a coffee the kids were drinking beers and burning rubber in the park. (regular occurrence)

didn't need to provide them with my last name and that I was leaving with my son (12). I have no record, and yet they managed to use excessive force and threats, leave my child at the local Fas Gas and then take me to the local stn where I was then held for whatever reason, and then let go....just like that with my ticket issued by some woman I had never seen before. what is this world coming to? do they have that right? was I supposed to give them my info although I was not under arrest? what side am I supposed to skate on, and am I allowed to skate onto the street when no cars are coming to get to the next sidewalk. info please mail me to

councilors cannot speak openly to each other about the issues that are at hand,
why did we even vote for a new council if no one has the guts to make any changes.
We need the new council to take the stand for the business people & citizens in High River. Why is it that there have been no changes. There are obviously still people involved in controlling how things are dealt with in this town. So don't start talking about scandals until the real issues are dealt with.

Comments: I have a problem with the driving habits of some drivers in High River. I am adamant about not speeding, especially in school zones and highly residential areas. But I am very frustrated with people driving down 12th Ave and other main roads, going 30 km/h! Usually I am driving to or from work using this road, and it takes me just about as long to weave the residential streets. By no means should a person speed, but please – be considerate and be aware of your surroundings and don’t slow down traffic at 30 km/hr in 50km/h zones. 50 km/h was decided upon by lawmakers that it was a safe and prudent speed, safe for other vehicles and a good speed to be able to stop for pedestrians. Why I am I always being stuck behind 25-30 km drivers (they are from all ages)…I don’t understand!

Date: 2/14/2005
Time: 1:39:46 PM
Comments While I'm at it...to the earlier post looking for ideas to save the smaller retailers in his village where the bad ole Tesco store moved in:
You may as well liquidate yer assets, close down shop and get yourself a Tesco job application if what's happening in High River is any reflection of what will transpire ahead. You see, many people blame the evil corporate ogre but the reality is that we the consumers vote with our wallets and we all have to make a choice- do we support local business or save money and revel in the huge eye-popping assortment at the shiny new Tesco/Walmart/whatever billionaire-run greed machine you want to name. They are successful because we the people make them that way, not because they actually deliver the level of customer service they advertise or pay their employees (our neighbors) great wages. Same thing when we complain more broadly about increasing domestic unemployment and cheap quality goods- look at what you buy and if you see "Made in China" on it you should hit yourself over the head with it next time any of those two complaints come up in the same conversation. Who would ever have expected 10 years ago to buy something like a DVD player for $50? I can't blame anybody, times are tough...we all need to save a buck when we can. Reality sucks and every mall has a dollar store to remind you of that.

Comments Well, one thing for sure is I you are not doing the exhaust conversion for the
environmental benefits. If improving fuel economy or emissions made your truck quieter, would you be forking out the cash to convert? Of course not. Why don't we all see this dispute for what it really is- mature
vs. immature. Oh, you can tell me about 40 yr olds with loud trucks or bikes or tattoos or whatever. They just never grew out of the rebellious phase and they need people like Jeff to be antagonistic because if the consensus/status quo loved what they were doing it would no longer have the tough-ass/rebellious/in your face/whateveryawannacallit appeal and where would that leave you all? And if it wasn't for all your obnoxious MTV video-wannabe behaviours- loud trucks, bikes, tattoos, body
piercing, etc, etc included- what would us boring old farts and prudes have to bitc# about on this and other forums? You have to understand this is often the only place where many men can flex their muscle without being endangered- cuz if we expressed ourselves this way in public to anyone other than a town hall gathering of stuffed shirts and soccer moms, we'd get the crap beat out of us. Ha Ha Ha...I'm just being honest here.

I can't wait to see the look on your face when Kid with Loud Truck runs you down because you threw a rock through his windshield! I don't hear you complaining about Ford/Dodge diesels which are as loud as tractor-trailers. Or maybe you just have a bias against
"Kid"-specific loud trucks...?
Performance exhaust systems are fantastic - can't wait to install mine in a couple of months. They really improve the fuel economy on a truck - the amplified Chevy rumble is just a fringe benefit. (The effort to save fuel is our little contribution to saving the environment - everyone should be thanking us for doing our part.) In keeping with this commitment to the environment, I'm actually going to leave the catalytic converter ON this time. If you want me to do a driveby with my new Gibson exhaust, let me know where you live - you'll be impressed by how great it sounds.
P.S. To everyone begging the cops to go after people with loud trucks: A better job for them would be going after all you people doing 20-30 kph (literally) all the way through High River. I don't blame people for passing you on a solid line in the middle of town when you're doing 20 or signalling for 2 blocks, then slamming on the brakes for no reason in the middle of a block because you're suddenly not sure where you are or where you were going. You're lucky all they're doing is passing you. If you can't maintain at least 50 kph, you shouldn't be on the road. Don't forget - holding up traffic is against the law, too.

Concerning: 2005 NYC EMS SOFTBALL LEAGUE
Date: 12/22/2004
Time: 1:52:03 AM
Comments: Welcome to the NYC EMS SOFTBALL LEAGUE.
www.emsleague.com , one of the biggest & premier softball leagues in New York City! The League is now entering it's 19th season and we invite all teams to come and join us, in a very fun, fair, very competitive and well organized League. The league was originally established in 1987, and the league was made up then, as a stress reliever to all NYC EMS workers
(EMT’s & Paramedics), to come out and have some fun and morale with other co-workers. The League then had an 8 game schedule and only 6 teams competing in the league.
The League now has flourished into well over "100 teams," with a 30 game schedule and well over 50 ball fields, with most of the top teams from the NYC tri-state area agencies competing in the league, but any team may join our league that will conduct themselves in a sportsmanship manner. The League also is one of the most inexpensive Leagues in the city at only $550, to join for the entire season, yet giving out trophies to all teams and a total of almost $10,000 in cash prizes.
In the 2005 Season, the League will start the first week in April, and it will be a 30 Game regular season schedule, that runs until the middle of August, with the Playoffs starting in September. Also there will be 2 umpires at every game at 35 dollars per game, but with over 100 teams in the League, the top 64 Teams making the playoffs.
The League will be broken up into 2 separate conferences
A. MODIFIED CONFERENCE (10;00 PITCHING, NOT ABOVE THE SHOULDER)
B. COED CONFERENCE (MEN & WOMEN PLAYERS, MINIMUM 3 ON SAME TEAM)
C. Both conferences will play under our League Rules for each separate conference, and will have separate playoffs and separate winning prizes for each area.
The League is registered under the (ASA) American Softball Association, and is a modified softball league. The League also gets involved with other special events such as Exhibition games, All-Star games and Charity fundraisers. The league also has a very strong family base, where people can bring their wives and their children to the park in safety and enjoyment.
Next year the Top 64 teams will be making the playoffs in a NCAA Playoff bracket format vying for the 2005 EMS League Championship. Also, for the teams that do not make the money playoffs, this league has the Commissioner Cup Series (a morale playoffs), for all non regular season playoff teams, similar to the N.I.T. So there is something for everyone! Once again please come out and see, or join one of the number one leagues in the city
Thank You,
EMS League Commissioner

Concerning: Sour Gas Wells
Date: 12/14/2004
Time: 3:33:36 PM
Comments: Are we willing to allow sour gas well development in High River? Can we afford its potential effects on our health and also the potential devaluation of our property?
If it is of concern to you, it is important to let the town council know you object to allowing more sour gas wells in close proximity to High River. A decision in this regard is presently on the table.
"While Albertans await scientific studies with respect to human health effects, stories of perceived health effects from oil and gas operations proliferate daily. The following are just a few reported recently in various publications across the province.
- According to the Ludwig, Boonstra and Schilthuis families, air emissions in the area around their farm (which is surrounded by oil and gas operations) have resulted in health problems for years. They include: headaches, nausea, colds, skin
rashes, insomnia, miscarriages and stillbirths.
- T. Evans moved her family out of Alberta to escape emissions from the flaring of unwanted gas at oil and gas installations near her home. She believes her children were poisoned by flaring from a sour gas processing plant in the area. Blood
tests of her three-year old son revealed higher than normal levels of hydrocarbons, benzene and xylene. Although away from gas flaring now, her children remain extrasensitive to chemicals, getting nosebleeds from diesel truck emission or chlorinated pools for example.
- According to C. Sutton, her family was gassed four times by air emissions from a nearby oil and gas facility. She was rendered unconscious and suffered subsequent bouts of vomiting and loss of muscle control.
- The local health authority in the Turner Valley/Black Diamond region of Alberta has
decided to investigate whether there is a link between nearby sour gas wells and the above-average number of people with multiple sclerosis in the area. A local group of concerned residents brought the matter to health officials' attention, pointing out the large number of people in the area diagnosed with the nerve-deteriorating
disease" http://www.aclrc.com

Currently, I shuttle 3 others back and forth, leaving HR at 6am and leaving downtown Calgary at 4pm from the BP building (I don't recall the exact address off hand)I can do it for less than Good Co. with a different pay structure, get you back to HR earlier (1 hour) and with 5 or so new passengers, I would consider the comfort of a new Dodge Sprinter van (10 person). I am considered by those who commute with me now a safe driver, licensed with the appropriate class. Interested ? Let me know at mcallister@telus.ne

Comments: Why is it so impossible to get a job in or around high river? There are little to no job openings other then for farmers and trades people. It's making it incredibly hard for younger people to flourish in the town. I'm 18 and have an apartment and the bills to go along with it. I've gotten laid of 4 times in less then 3 months (due to lack of work)! Then I turn around thinking its ok I'll get another job, but there aren't any! I want to go back to school but first I have to get back on my feet. Why are there so few jobs? I thought high river was suppose to be thriving, surely there'd be more jobs. It's frustrating, it really really is.

Concerning: Safety across from Spitzee school
Date: 10/19/2004
Time: 1:04:53 PM
Comments: At the corner of 4th St and MAcleod Trail ,there is a need for a drain so that rain water and melted snow can evacuate.
Every year and especially during the winter months, this intersection becomes deadly. In fact all pedestrians have to take extra care to gwlak across 4th St.Also, and the winter of 2003 was the worst for that, cars get stuck, and can't start again because of their wheels spinning, and the accumu;lation of ice in front of their wheels.Of all the intersections in High River,I think this is the most dangerous .The second most dangerous would have to be at the 3 stop sign by the wwater tower. If you are going North on Crescent Av and hit the stop sign ,when it freezes over, you could find yourself right in the middle of the intersection...Very dangerous.
But the main reason why the Macleod and 4th is more dangerous is because there are kids going back and forth to go to Spitzee, elderly people walking from the manor to go downtown , and any car stopping or turning on 4th Street has to take extra caution because of the sheet of ice formed at every Chinook.
Not just the ice,if it rain or if the snow melts,it is impossible to cross the street without HAVING to go at least 6 or 8 feet on Macleod Trail to get to the other side.
Since there is now a new mayor and new team, let's see what they get done for this intersection.
As another safety issue for children is the fact that the speed zone is a school zone, when there are ids going in that park all year round. This should be a 30 km zone Period. No major money there, just a sign change is needed.Or maybe they wait for a couple of deaths...(makes me think of the Aldersyde Junction ...)
If you agree with the drain on Macleod, maybe we should get a petition started..

Concerning: Hilda Dunwoodie
Date: 9/26/2004
Time: 6:29:18 PM
Comments: Ralph Klein - premier@gov.ab.ca
Don Tannas MLA - Highwood@assembly.ab.ca
Gary G. Mar Minister of Health and wellness-calgary.nosecreek@assembly.ab.ca
We are writing in hope of getting some assistance for Hilda Dunwoodie, 92, our mother, grandmother, friend, and citizen of Canada. She moved from Toronto to Edmonton in 2001 to be closer to family. In October of that year she moved into a private senior's home in Edmonton, using her own savings and pension income supplemented by her family. When this became a financial hardship, she was transferred to a government care room in the same facility and then to the dementia ward as she continued to decline mentally.
She had a fall in December of 2003, breaking her pelvis and ending up at the University of Alberta Hospital. At that time the home she had been in refused to take her back, and it was apparent that she would need much more daily care than she had been getting up until then. Her son in Edmonton had died in August of 2003 and her family wanted to move her to High River, where she has a physician, Dr. Powell, and where her daughter and grandchildren live.
Hilda was put on a wait list for transfer, but despite the existence of this list, there appears to be some regional animosity that prevents reasonable action on the part of social agencies in Alberta. Given this, her daughter, Gail, has been told that essentially the regions in Alberta do not transfer patients and that in all likelihood Hilda will never be moved. Social agencies have been repeatedly contacted, the premier's office has been contacted, and the family has tried everything they can to make this happen.
Meanwhile, Hilda's dementia continues to progress. She is now in St. Joseph's auxiliary hospital in Edmonton, where she receives good care but since they are understaffed it would help to have a family member there to assist her with some of the daily tasks she has trouble with, such as eating.
Her daughter, Sharon, visits every 6-8 weeks from Toronto, and her other daughter, Gail, drives the 4 hours from High River every week with her husband, but with winter coming on the trip on the highway can be dangerous. Her son's widow visits when she can. If Hilda were living in the High River Long Term Care, daily interaction with her family would greatly increase her quality of life and would provide an additional level of care that only family can provide.
Needless to say, this within-province regionalism has come as a surprise to everyone, since penalizing an elderly woman for moving so she could be closer to family is not what most Canadians like to see in their health care system. It would appear that as you age, you better make sure you are where you want to be for the rest of your life, because obviously the bureaucracy cannot be penetrated by well-meaning family members.
Hilda Dunwoodie is a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and friend. Although her dementia is, of course, progressive, we believe her mental status will deteriorate faster than it needs to if she is left alone in Edmonton. Her daughter, Gail, and many of Gail’s family including Hilda’s great-grandchildren, live in High River and would be able to interact with her daily, increasing her quality of life.
We ask that you intervene in an effort to get Hilda transferred so that her remaining time can be spent near her family. We believe this request is no more than you or anyone else would ask for their family members.

Comments: My wife, Julie, and I are very pleased to be moving to High River with our family. We've been living in the Vancouver Lower Mainland in B.C. You might think of Vancouver with the beauty of the surrounding mountains, the ocean and beaches; we think of different things here, namely: the crystal meth invading our society, street racing taking lives, rapes, murder, provincial sales tax, astronomical housing prices, severe traffic congestion particularly at the many bridges, extremely soft judicial system, car thieves and drug dealers who walk the streets the day after getting busted... Shall we go on? We're looking forward to High River. No place is perfect, but yours is much, much better than the hell that we're coming from.

Comments: On behalf of the Foothills AIM Society I want to express our gratitude for how your website has supported our initiatives to generate operation funds. Placing our online charity auction on your front page has helped introduce our endeavours to a much wider audience. Non-profit charities can at times be labeled as groups that will always be asking for something, but at our Society we seek to offer an exchange that serves as win-win for all involved. Unfortunately, non-profit charities cannot compete with the advertising and promotion budgets of for-profit business so it is immensely appreciated when a medium as established as yours will offer their resources.
Being familiar myself with the internet, and the escalating value it presents in reaching a wide audience, your assistance offers so much more than

If this sounds like a reciprocal plug for your website, I will certainly live with that because I can comprehend what we have been afforded through your generosity. Appreciatively,
